Portfolio of Works
Plein Air Landscapes
Most of the landscapes in the collection are done 'en plein aire', meaning on location outside in the elements, or are studio works based upon outdoor studies. Also called 'plein air painting', the discipline combines the immediacy of the scene being right in front of one, as well the time pressure caused by rapidly changing light and weather conditions. Additional conditions such as dust, wind, heat, insects etc. can make the practice feel like being in a marathon. Still, for me there is nothing else like it. I often experience a sense of awe at the magnitude of nature's creation and am humbled to be its witness.
At times, I will use the paintings done in plein air for further work in the studio. I find that the energy absorbed in nature translates into the studio work.
Sikh Tradition
These paintings reflect aspects of the Sikh faith, which originated in India in the 15th c. with the advent of a revolutionary teacher named Guru Nanak. I embraced the Sikh faith in 1971 at the age of 19, when I was a student at Pomona College in Claremont, CA. The faith emphasizes service to others, meditation, and living a spiritual life with home and family. The Golden Temple in Amritsar is its holiest shrine.
